Apple Valley, San Bernardino County
Apple orchards gave Apple Valley its name in the early 1900s, though the trees are long gone. The modern town dates to 1946, when developers Newton Bass and Bud Westlund began selling ranch lots and built the Apple Valley Inn to host prospective buyers, many of them Hollywood figures. The community sits at about 2,900 feet beside the Mojave River and incorporated in 1988.
